YOUTHIE AWARDS 2008

YOUTH WORK INTENSIVE

The BEST Initiative announces the first annual "Youthie Awards" for 2008! These awards for Youth Workers only will be presented at the Youth Work Intensive on Thursday, March 20 at the closing of the day (2-2:45pm).

Please nominate yourself or a fellow youthworker for ONE of the following categories, based on BEST's 6 Core Competency Areas. You do not have to attend the Youth Work Intensive to nominate a youth worker. Ballots will be distributed at the Intensive and attendees (fellow youth workers) will vote on the recipient of each award. Awards will be presented at the closing of the Intensive on March 20 at 2pm in the Ryan Lounge.*

Youthie Awards Categories

(Core Competency Areas):

Advocacy/Networking

  • Knowledge of Youth rights
  • Ability to network with variety of external systems
  • Knowledge of schools and career options
  • Knowledge of social context of youth and how it affects them

             

Assessment

  • Ability to reflect on one’s practice and performance
  • Ability to organize and manage workload
  • Community and family engagement
  • Knowledge of community especially in regard to youth and family
  • Knowledge of family structures

Communication

  • Ability to develop and maintain a relationship of trust with young people
  • Ability to convey information so it is received in the manner it was intended
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Intervention

  • Ability to recognize need for intervention
  • Ability to deal with conflicts
  • Knowledge of intervention strategies

Program Development

  • Understand developmental framework/knowledge of youth
  • Knowledge of Adolescent Development stages
  • Knowledge of Agency/Organizational Mission
  • Knowledge of Organizational policies and procedures in regards to youth
  • Ability to foster Youth Empowerment

Program Implementation

  • Knowledge of Group Work
  • Ability to facilitate groups
  • Knowledge of planning activities
  • Ability to plan and implement activities
  • Ability to motivate and engage young people
  • Ability to recognize and respond to youth needs and interests

*TMF will review initial nominations and advance strong candidates for the ballot process.
